The rice root nematode, Hirschmanniella oryzae

The symptoms, pathology, life cycle, survival and control of Hirschmanniella oryzae on rice are discussed. Infection is not accompanied by any recognisable field symptoms. Infected roots first show a yellowish to brown colour which darkens. Heavily infected roots eventually decay. In a field experiment infected seedlings showed reduced survival, delayed emergence of tillers and discoloured older leaves.
