The role of phytoalexins in Verticillium wilt of lucerne (Medicago sativa)

The effect of 5 phytoalexins induced in excised lucerne leaves on spore germination and germ tube length in 2 isolates of V. albo-atrum (V1 pathogenic to lucerne and V2 pathogenic to tomato but not lucerne) was investigated. Compound 1 was identified as sativan and 2 as medicarpin but the identification of 3, 4 and 5 is not complete. Compounds 1-4 were more inhibitory to V2 than V1 but compound 5 had little effect on germ tube length of either isolate.
