The use of 15N in studies of nitrogen fixation by legumes and the nitrogen balance of fertilizer nitrogen in the soil

In experiments on grey podzolized soils of Polesia in the Ukrainian SSR the relationship between nitrogen fixation by legumes and application of various levels of mineral N was studied. With the application of 40 kg mineral N/ha, nitrogen fixation in peas was 51.4% and in lupin 67.2% of the total N in the crop. With 80 kg N/ha nitrogen fixation in peas sharply decreased to 18.7 and in lupin to 45.8% of the total N in the crop. A study of the balance of fertilizer N showed that its utilization by plants varied within the range of 56-62%; part of the nitrogen (16-33%) was firmly fixed by the soil. Gaseous losses of fertilizer N in the year of application amounted to 5-27.9% in soil under crops and to 34.8-38.7% in the fallow soil. No fertilizer N was lost by leaching in soil under crops and in the fallowed soil the loss did not exceed 0.5% of the N applied.
