Virulence genes present in populations of Puccinia recondita f. sp. tritici and Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici in Italy during 1977 and 1978

Rust samples collected each year from the field in different parts of Italy and from wheat varieties or lines carrying known resistance genes were studied using a number of differential varieties. During 1977-78, little variation occurred in populations of P. recondita; races 12 and 61 were the most prevalent, while biotypes of race 77 were sporadic. Variation occurred in populations of P. graminis, and new biotypes of race 24 able to infect Valgerardo were identified.
