Yields and cross-pollination of soybeans as affected by honey bees and alfalfa leafcutting bees

Yields and cross-pollination of soybeans as affected by honey bees and alfalfa leafcutting bees

American Bee Journal 118(8): 555-556, 558, 560

Three common varieties of soya beans were grown in 3 pairs of fields; a honeybee colony was put into one of each pair, just before flowering, and Megachile pacifica were put into the other 3 fields. Honeybees foraged extensively on the flowers, and the colonies increased in strength and produced surplus honey. M. pacifica seldom visited the flowers, and populations decreased by almost 60%.
