The failure of livestock improvement schemes in Africa are often attributed to what are generally subsumed under the title of "social factors". These include perverse response to prices, a culture of accumulation for accumulation's sake, keeping animals for sentimental reasons, a lack of interest in money or what it will buy, and a failure to respond to market demands.
