'Taming' the redwood

'Taming' the redwood

American Forests 84(8): 18-23, 37-39

An account of the first attempts at selective breeding of coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens). Redwoods show high genetic variability and have 66 chromosomes (vs. 20-24 in all other conifers). Cuttings were taken from the upper twigs of 200 selected trees, and readily produced male and/or female strobili. Controlled pollination was then carried out.
