Month-old chicks with spontaneous vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) deficiency showed anaemia, with anisocytosis and macrocytosis, great morphological changes in erythroblasts and poikilocytosis. This blood picture is characteristic of vitamin B12 deficiency in chicks, but also resembles that of avian erythroleukosis as found in adult birds. The deficiency was caused by feeding with antibiotics which destroyed the intestinal bacteria.
