1,3,7-Trimethylxanthine, a new chemosterilant for stored grain pest, Callosobruchus chinensis (L.)

During studies carried out in India, the compound 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine was isolated from a seed extract of arabica coffee, and proved to be an effective chemosterilant for the stored-grain pest Callosobruchus chinensis (L.), causing almost 100% sterility at a concentration of 1.5%. At a similar concentration, the compound had no phytotoxic effect on the crop plant Vigna mungo.
