1,3,7-trimethylxanthine - a new natural weedicide: its mode of action

1,3,7-Trimethylxanthine (1,3,7-T) is a natural herbicide derived from Coffea arabica. 1,3,7-T at 1000 p.p.m. selectively inhibited germination of Amaranthus spinosus. Treated seeds showed a marked reduction (about 29.4%) in amylase activity. Kinetic studies and in vitro treatment of the cell-free enzyme showed no effect on its catalytic property. The inhibitory effect of 1,3,7-T on amylase activity could not be counteracted with GA.
