Cell cultures of tobacco Xanthi given N as nitrate had urease specific activities 20-25% lower than cells given N as urea. Urease specific activity was not affected immediately when cells were transferred from nitrate urea medium or vice versa; the change in activity occurred over many generations. Glutamine was the 1st major organic product of assimilation of 13NH4 by cells grown on nitrate, urea or ammonium succinate as the sole source of N and of 13NO3 by cells cultured on nitrate.
