(1) A water-soluble complex was isolated with 18-25% lignin and a constant polysaccharide composition of 64% xylose, 9% arabinose, 9% mannose, 4% galactose and 3% glucose. (2) Gel-chromatographic studies with urea (3 and 6 M) as solvent and eluent indicated the formation of the complex by valence and hydrogen bonding, the latter possible being formed in the conc. sol. used for the isolation.
