2. Theories of capitalist transition and underdevelopment

In chapter (2) the nature of capitalist development in the periphery is explored through various theoretical positions. First, the early Marx of the 'Manifesto' and the classical Marxist theories of imperialism which emphasize the progressive role of capitalism. These positions are compared with recent neo-Marxist writing, including the controversial work of Andre Gunder Frank and the Latin American dependency 'School'.
