4. Sidoarjo, East Java, and Subang, West Java

The paper examines two villages where the introduction of the HYVs is distinguished by wide differences in their impact upon the village economies. In the first village, located in East Java, the adoption rate for the HYVs has been quite high, whereas in the second village, located in West Java, the response rate to the new varieties has been much less favourable. In addition, high variability was also discovered in the yield performance of the HYVs in comparison to local varieties.
