7. Continuities and discontinuities in China: the natural village and the production brigade



Village viability in contemporary society: 185-204



Four psycho-social needs are identified that should be met in village cultural development: (1) the need for security - which is survival support; (2) equity, encompassing justice and freedom from exploitation; (3) participation; and (4) individuation. The paper indicates to what extent the natural village responded to these social needs and to what extent the current socio-political organization in China allows villages to retain or develop them.
