9. Women's work and their status: rural Indian evidence of labour market and environment effects on sex differences in childhood mortality

Women' s roles and population trends in the Third World: 202-236

One direct indicator of the relative status of women and men can be found in a comparison of their survival prospects. Since adult occupational roles influence mortality risks, childhood sex-specific survival differences are a better indicator of male and female status within the family.
