A Life History Study of the Gray-banded Kingsnake, Lampropeltis mexicana alterna, in Texas

A Life History Study of the Gray-banded Kingsnake, Lampropeltis mexicana alterna, in Texas

Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute, Alpine, Texas, Contribution (87): 48

The taxonomic status and various aspects of the life history of the gray-banded kingsnake are reviewed. It is a secretive, primarily nocturnal snake which feeds largely on lizards. In captivity it usually accepts mice, as well. Little sexual dimorphism is shown by gray-banded kingsnakes. Reproduction and social behavior in captive kingsnakes is well-known, but has not been observed under natural conditions.
