A clinical note on buffalo calf mortality

Of 357 buffalo calves born in 1969-78 at Haryana Agricultural University, 28.1% died before 1 yr of age. The rate of mortality ranged from 4% in 1969 to 60% in 1973. Females had a higher mortality than males (29.6 vs. 26%), but the difference was not significant. For calves aged <1, 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6 and 6-12 mth, the rate of mortality was 8.6, 4.6, 4.1, 2.6, 4.4, 2.8 and 4.4% resp.
