A combined procedure for the identification of cytoplasmically male-sterile maize types of unknown origin

On the basis of microsporogenesis and pollen stainability, 20 lines with different types of cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS), including one with an unknown type of CMS, fell into three groups, typified by the C, T and S cytoplasms. The same three groups could be distinguished when mitochondrial DNAs were subjected to restriction endonuclease fragment analysis.
