About 300 increment cores of Scots pine, Norway spruce and birch, selected from cores taken in the Swedish National Forest Survey, were measured by two methods: (a) measuring the width of the rings along the line of the core; and (b) measuring each ring in a direction perpendicular to the boundaries of that particular ring. For the average of all ring-widths, (a) gave a significantly higher value than (b), the av. difference being 0.9%.
