A note on conversion of new male sterile lines by limited backcrossing in pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides) Burm. S. and H

A two-phase programme to produce cytoplasmically male-sterile lines (CMS) of P. typhoides resistant to Sclerospora graminicola is described based on the CMS lines Tif23A, Tif23D2A and J126D2A, their corresponding maintainers (B lines) used as recurrent parents and a number of resistant and agronomically desirable doners chosen from Indo-African intervarietal combinations. Twenty-six lines were eventually selected to be tested for combining ability for yield and its components.
