A note on the influence of boar age on its ability to advance puberty in the gilt

A note on the influence of boar age on its ability to advance puberty in the gilt

Animal Production 32(2): 211-213

24 Large White X (Landrace X Large White) gilts were allocated to 1 of 4 groups such that at least 1 gilt from each of 6 litters was in each group. The 3 treatments involved 30 min daily contact with a boar, the boar being aged 2 yr, or 11 or 6.5 mth at the start of the trial. The 4th group served as untreated controls. The experiment began at a gilt age of 165 days and continued until puberty was detected. The gilts were slaughtered 5 days after puberty was reached.
