Activated carbon protects direct seeded tomatoes from metribuzin

An anti-crustant was prepared by wetting either vermiculite or ground corn cobs with 1 quart of water/ft3 in a mixer and slowly adding carbon. Four experiments showed that direct sown tomatoes were protected against metribuzin at 0.5 lb/acre by carbon at 1 lb/ft3 of vermiculite. The carbon + corn cobs mixture was not commercially acceptable. The above rate of metribuzin gave excellent weed control but when the rate was halved control of some species was unsatisfactory.
