The thesis includes chapters on the following subjects: (1) agricultural extension and social change (main lines of sociological discussion of rural development); (2) the Pasaman area development project (finding out how to satisfy basic needs in small farms in a rice growing region); (3) investigation of the actual content of extension on introducing mechanization on these farms; (4) small farmers' decisions on innovations as a basis for encouraging participatory development (a discussion of central factors and local conditions for an appropriate advisory service, using mechanization as an example).
