Grain production in China in the 1970s is examined and the prospects for attaining the target of 400 m tons in 1985 are assessed. There are grounds for expecting a tangible acceleration in the rate of production of agriculture, which has averaged nearly 3% during the 1970s, despite severe weather problems. The 1980s should see the pay-off from decades of investment in the rural economy in the form of improved agricultural techniques, chemical fertilizers, mechanization etc.
