Biological productivity of 22-year plantations of Scots pine and Siberian larch in the Yaroslavl region

Data are presented on the growth and biomass of plantations of Pinus sylvestris and Larix sibirica established at initial planting densities of 6500 and 3500 seedlings/ha respectively on former pasture. At 22 yr the total phytomass was 110-115 t/ha, of which 85-100 t/ha was in the stems. The (denser) pine plantation had the greater absolute productivity, but in terms of production per unit wt. of foliage the larch was 43% more productive than the pine.
