Breeding dry beans and fresh beans for resistance to halo blight (Pseudomonas phaseolicola) and bean common mosaic virus (BCMV): five years' work

In 1976-1981, 11 generations were bred in the greenhouse and three in the field from crossing the semideterminate French bean line PI150414, which has very high tolerance to Ps. phaseolicola, with several lines and varieties of French bean bred at the Salerno Institute which had good resistance to BCMV or good agricultural characteristics. This material was inoculated artificially or in natural conditions with strains of Ps. phaseolicola and of BCMV from different localities in Italy.
