Six out of 15 half sibs, derived from a single ear of a E. perennis X Z. mays hybrid open-pollinated during eleven generations, possessed a chromosome fragment in the nucleolus. The fragment behaved like a univalent chromosome, moving at random to one or other pole. It is thought likely to have a terminal centromere. At the point where it occurs, the nucleolus is enlarged or appears to be forming a further nucleolus.
