Laboratory tests with suspensions of a primary powder containing the serotype H-14 of Bacillus thuringiensis in 5 liquid media against 4th-instar larvae of Culex pipiens L., which were carried out for 6 months in France, showed that the biological activity of this pathogen was rapidly lost in ethanol, while in distilled water, either neutral or buffered at pH5, there was no detectable loss at either 10 or 35 deg C., and in distilled water buffered at pH9 the product remained stable at 10 but not at 35 deg C. A slight loss of activity was observed in suspensions in acetone. Although no definite conclusions could be reached, it seemed probable that a simple filtration test could be developed to detect in commercial formulations of the serotype H-14 the presence of chemical contaminants that could result in the detection of an artificially high titre of specific delta -endotoxin during bioassay tests.
