Trials conducted on the control of S. maritimus at IRRI also studied the effect of (a) several herbicides or hand weeding on the yield of transplanted rice IR36 in the 1978 dry season, (b) the effect of rate and time of 2,4-D application on the yield of transplanted rice IR42 in the 1978 wet season, (c) the effect of weeding methods and cropping patterns on the crop yields of rice, soyabean and maize in the 1978 dry season and (d) the effect of weeding methods and cropping pattern on rice yields in the 1978 wet season. Rice grain yields were 3.0-4.8 t/ha with herbicides and 5.0 t/ha with hand weeding in (a); were max. (4.0 t/ha) with thiobencarb/2,4-D IPE followed by bentazone in (b); were max. (4.2 t/ha) with rotary weeding in (c) and reached 3.4, 3.8 and 3.7 t/ha for continuous transplanted rice, upland crop-transplanted rice and upland crop-dry sown rain-fed bunded rice, resp., in (d). In (c), max. maize yields were 41 000-44 500 ears/ha with hand weeding or application of butachlor at 2 kg a.i./ha followed by bentazone at 1 kg a.i./ha, and soyabean yields were max. at 632 kg/ha with hand weeding.
