Control of glucose metabolism in lactating-rat mammary gland: effects of other substrates, insulin and starvation

Control of glucose metabolism in lactating-rat mammary gland: effects of other substrates, insulin and starvation

Biochemical Society Transactions 5(4): 829-834

This article reviews the role of glucose in the mammary gland and effects on glucose of insulin, starvation, acetoacetate, pyruvate, lactate and acetate. Current knowledge suggests that the control of glucose utilization in rat mammary gland is similar in many respects to that in other rat tissues, but there are differences related to the gland's role as a major biosynthetic organ.
