When the salivary glands of 10-day-old adults of Periplaneta americana (L.) were removed, a gradual decline in mid-gut invertase activity occurred. An injection of salivary gland extract in the haemocoel of salivarectomised insects caused the re-establishment, to a large extent, of the normal mid-gut enzyme levels.
