Control strategies in whitefly-borne viruses -- a review

In this review, aleyrodids (Aleurotrachelus, Aleurothrixus, Bemisia and Trialeurodes spp.) that transmit viruses to economic plants in different countries are listed from the literature, and control measures are discussed in sections on cultural control, application of growth regulators to the plant, heat treatment, use of resistant varieties, biological control of the vector (by means of predators, parasites or pathogenic fungi), application of oil sprays to the plant, and use of insecticides. A table is given in which 29 crops susceptible to whitefly-borne viruses are listed, together with the virus, the country or continent where it occurred and the author reporting it, and another table in which 7 species of Indian crops are listed with the whitefly-borne virus to which they are susceptible, the known varieties of that virus, the degree of susceptibility or resistance in the plant, and the author reporting it. It is noted that physical and chemical control measures used to kill aleyrodids or to prevent their attack have led to a considerable decline in the incidence of whitefly-borne viruses.
