Of 26 marasmic infants selected on admission to a nutrition recovery centre, excluding those with secondary malnutrition, half received copper 80 mu g/kg daily as sulphate, the others a placebo. They were paired by birthweight, age and sex and were fed freely on milk-based diets with added carbohydrate and fat to provide more than 150 kcal/kg daily and protein more than 4.5 g/kg daily. Vitamin and iron supplements were given. The mean plus or minus s.d.
