Convergent evolution in the consumer organisms of mediterranean Chile and California

Convergent evolution in the consumer organisms of mediterranean Chile and California

US/IBP Synthesis Series 5: 144-192

Concerning the example of similar mediterranean environments from California and Chile, the questions considered are (1) whether convergent evolution is a reality given similar adaptive landscapes but substantially different gene pools on the two continents, and (2) whether the remaining inevitable differences between analogous organisms, populations, and communities are explicable in terms of evolutionary or ecological theory with respect to historical, temporal, or other differences in selective regimes of the two continents. These questions are both answered in the affirmative after consideration of many species from both regions.
