To obtain winter from spring wheats, sowing was carried out on dates optimal for winter varieties (in Leningrad, 25 August to 5 September). Only a few plants survived (0.13-0.28%) but they were typical winter forms, with good winter hardiness (70-98% plants surviving). Spring wheats with long growth periods generally gave late winter wheats while spring wheats with short growth periods gave early and very early winter forms.
