Correlation between K+ uptake, H+ extrusion and transmembrane electrical potential difference in root tissue from a maize hybrid and its inbred parents

Net K uptake and H efflux resistance and quality characteristics of B37 and Mo17 and their hybrid were significantly higher in the hybrid than in the parents. Similar results were obtained in the absence of K from the medium for differences in electrical potential between cell vacuoles in the 5-7th cortical layers 5 mm from the apex of 2.5 cm long root segments, but differences were much smaller in the presence of 3 mM K in the medium.
