Correlation of medicarpin production with resistance to Phytophthora megasperma f.sp. medicaginis in alfalfa seedlings

The resistance of 18 lucerne cvs. to this fungus, as determined in glasshouse tests, was correlated with the accumulation of medicarpin, one of 3 antifungal compounds produced in seedling assays. Two of the induced compounds were isolated and identified as 3-hydroxy,9-methoxypterocarpan (medicarpin), the major antifungal compound, and 4',7-dihydroxyflavanon (liquiritigenin), by UV and mass spectral data. The 3rd compound was not identified.
