In a study in 1972-3 of the relationship between N available in soil and seed cotton yield of cotton H-14 given N as urea at 6 rates from 0 to 150 kg/ha, yield was curvilinearly related (r2 = 0.93) to added N with an opt. at 105 kg N/ha. The Mitscherlich equation as modified by Bray, which includes a term for N already available in the soil, was well suited to predicting the best amount of N to apply, with good agreement between predicted and actual yields.
