Cutting unseasoned western red cedar with titanium carbide-coated, carbide-tipped saws

Unseasoned western red cedar is extremely corrosive; chemical wear of saws results from chelation of metal by polyphenolic and tropolone compounds in the wood. The effectiveness of spark-hardened titanium carbide coating was assessed in mill and laboratory trials. Data for cutting force, surface roughness of sawn lumber and cutting-edge retreat were collected for coated and uncoated saws using western hemlock as a reference material.
