A local variety of the tetraploid A. wakegi and the natural amphidiploid hybrid between A. ascalonicum (from Thailand) and A. fistulosum 'Kujyo' were studied. A. wakegi was completely pollen sterile and had a seed set of <3%, while the hybrid was pollen fertile with 17.8-55.5% seed set. However, in both plants, >90% of PMCs examined had 16 bivalent chromosomes with normal pairing.
