Diallel analysis of the inheritance of some quantitative characters in Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). I. Heterosis

A diallel cross amongst ten inbred lines was studied for eight characters in 1972-1973 at two localities. Maximum heterosis over the better parent was 126% for yield, 25.5% for boll weight, 18.7% for lint index, 17.4% for seed index and 7.7% for days to flowering at one locality, and 73.9% for yield, 48% for ginning outturn, 28.6% for boll weight, 18.0% for seeds per boll, 13.2% for lint index, 13.1% for seed index and 7.0% for days to flowering at the other locality.
