Maize hybrid KSC 360 for grain and Beke TC 370 for silage were grown at 6, 8, 10 or 12 plants/m2 in rows 50 or 70 cm apart in 1978-9. In a dry yr, grain and whole plant DM yields were higher with 50 cm than with 70 cm between rows. The proportion of grain to whole plant decreased as plant density increased. At supraoptimal plant density the yields changed little with 50 cm between rows but decreased with 70 cm between rows.
