Ecology of black beetle, Heteronychus arator (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) - population sampling



New Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, 241: 79-86



A system of sampling populations of Heteronychus arator (F.) in pastures in New Zealand was investigated in order to obtain estimates of numbers for use in studies on the population dynamics of the scarabaeid Dispersion characteristics and the precision of the sampling data were established. The very dynamic nature of the life-cycle, which gave rise to considerable overlap of the life stages on most sampling occasions, prevented age-specific sampling.
