Comparison of economic results of two sets of dairy farms kept by the Loire-Atlantique management centre over a 10-year period shows that, although intensification has greatly increased farm income, this increase has been almost entirely used up as working capital. Intensification then becomes virtually a necessity as the only means of obtaining an increase in income which would otherwise be taken off in tax on disposable family income.
