Effect of a mixture of two rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars on the competitive ability of rice against weeds and on rice grain yield

Seedlings of rice cvs. IR 36 and IR 40 and a 1:1 mixture of the two were transplanted at 2 spacings (10 X 10 cm and 20 X 20 cm) and hand weeded 25 days later or left unweeded. Weed wt. in the wider spaced plots was greater than with the narrower spacing in both weeded and unweeded plots. The weeding regime did not affect yields in the 10 X 10 cm spacings but in the wider spacing yields from the unweeded plots were significantly lower. The competitive ability of cvs.
