Rye and wheat were grown in a sandy loam soil in 1967-71 at Wittenberg and maintained at 50% max. water holding capacity (WHC) until the 4-leaf stage and thereafter at 20, 35, 50, 65 or 80% WHC with or without a fine spray of water when air temp. was >20 deg C. Root growth and shoot:root ratio increased with increase in WHC up to 65% and were higher with than without the water spray.
