Effect of chronic moisture stress on capsularis and olitorius jute: 1. Growth and yield

In outdoor pot trials, DM contents of water stressed (a) Corchorus olitorius JRO 632 and (b) C. capsularis JRC 212 plants 99 days after sowing were 89.6 and 70.7%, resp., of well-watered control plants. Stressed plants were more efficient in partitioning of DM into root and leaf, and the higher yield of (a) was due to its greatly increased CGR in the last 27 days of growth. Fibre and wood yields were reduced by chronic moisture stress by 25 and 33%, resp., in (a) and by 39 and 43% in (b).
