Effect of different soil types and irrigation on yield quantity and structure and on onion storability

Onion trials in concrete microplots filled to a depth of 1 m were carried out with soils from 7 different areas of Poland. Irrigation was applied when the soil moisture decreased below the optimal level (50-60% of field capacity). Seeds of the onion Sochaczewska germinated best on a black soil. The highest total and marketable yields were obtained on alluvial soil and loess chernozem. Onions on these soils produced the highest percentage of optimum size bulbs (4.5-7 cm in diameter).
