Effect of the stage of lactation and pregnancy on the hematological and clinicochemical parameters in the dairy cow

31 parameters were investigated in 1847 blood samples from Swiss dairy cows more than or equal to 29 months old. There were significant differences between pregnant and non-pregnant cows in 12 parameters. In pregnant cows 17 parameters varied significantly during lactation: the most significant variations (P < 0.001) were in haemoglobin, erythrocyte count, leucocyte count, polymorphonuclear leucocyte count, small lymphocyte count, alpha 1 globulin, Cl, Fe, glucose, cholesterol, lactate dehydrogenase and glutamate oxaloacetic transaminase. In non-pregnant cows there were significant variations in 13 parameters during lactation, including (at P < 0.001) haematocrit, haemoglobin, eosinophil granulocyte count and cholesterol. Effects of stage of lactation and pregnancy on 24 parameters are plotted in graphs.
